Remixing Mr. Frommer’s Paperweight: How to Communicate with a Visual Artist

  1. Vibes: Assess What They Sent
Check out the original piece and get a feel for its essence. 🎨 🐘
  2. Color from Gray: Translate to Candy Coating
Bring practical aspects to life with color, turning the ordinary into the extraordinary 🎉
  3. Honest Mistakes: Embrace Imperfection / Disregard Erroneously Globularized Clusters
Don’t let small errors hold back the pursuit of something truly remarkable. 🌟

A pile of lead shot is a very effective way to weigh down whispy 3D prints

Cross section: This cross section shows the three stages of design for the project. The printer's infill in the top. Lead shot in the bottom right. And painted shot in the bottom left.

The final paperweight: a fully encased, 3D-printed cylinder filled with painted lead shot. It weighs about the same as a can of soda and matches the footprint size of a red Solo cup.

Core Accomplishments:

  • We’ve created joyful weights 🌈
  • We’ve contained the joyful weights 🔐
  • We’ve weighed down the print 🏋️

Context

Michael Frommer is an artist based in South Florida who runs Poobah Studios, working across various mediums. He and his wife Susan sent Carolina and me a wedding gift package that included an epoxy paperweight. This project is my version of a thank-you note.

Translating the Gift

Mr. Frommer’s gift came in three parts, sent as one cohesive piece across two mediums. In response, I’m subtracting by adding; my contribution is to give back in the form of a shadow box.

I’m hoping Mr. Frommer can show me how he would paint this plastic, adding his touch to complete the dialogue.
